Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in South African during the apartheid era. He is born on July 18th 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa. His father was Hendry Mphakanyiswa of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand where he studied law an 1942 – Bachelor of Arts degree University Of South Africa. His children are Makaziwe Mandela, Makgatho Mandela, Zenani Mandela, Madiba Thembekile Mandela, and Zindziswa Mandela. He was married various times. His first wife was Evelyn Ntoko Mase 1944-1957. The Second wife was Winnie Madikizela 1957- 1996. His present wife is Graca Machel whom he married in 1998. Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who was elected and served as president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
Mandela He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party’s apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in he was acquitted on all charges in 1961.
After the banning of the ANC (African National Congress) in 1960, Nelson Mandela argued for the setting up of a military wing within the ANC (African National Congress). In June 1961, the ANC (African National Congress) executive considered his proposal on the use of violent tactics and agreed that those members who wished to involve themselves in Mandela’s campaign would not be stopped from doing so by the ANC. This led to the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to five years with hard labor.
In 1963 when many fellow leaders of the ANC and the Umkhonto we Sizwe were arrested, Mandela was brought to stand trial with them for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. His statement from the dock received considerable international publicity.
On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robin Island Prison, off Cape Town; thereafter, he was at Pollsmoor Prison, nearby on the mainland. For 27 years he was imprisoned in exile.
Mandela was given his freedom back in 1990, He came back with full strength to end the act of apartheid and in 1994 he ran for the presidency of South Africa and won being the First Black president of South Africa, implementing and cementing a multi-ethnic government to oversee the county execution of this.
Leaving the political world of government positions Mandela continue to be a voice for peace and social justice in his home and throughout the world.
The month of November 2009, the UN (United Nations General Assembly) declared July 18th Nelson R. Mandela international day, to honor his birthday. This is the first time that the UN has ever designated a day dedicated to a person. Nelsson Mandela after being hospitalized returned home to be at peace during his last days with us. He passed away on December 5, 2013. His legacy lives on through his children. He will always be remembered as a leader for peace and not war and that we are all free.
Nelson Mandela has received over two hundred and fifty awards over four decades, most notably the Nobel Peace Prize, Bharat in 1993.
