David Campbell joined American Airlines as an hourly aircraft mechanic following a career in the U.S. Air Force. Campbell worked his way through the ranks of the airline, at one point becoming Vice President of Base Maintenance for two of the airlines’ major aircraft overhaul facilities. This made him responsible for the safety and performance of what was the largest fleet of aircraft in the world at the time.
